When I think of Valentine’s Day a few words come to mind. So, as I perused my photos on Facebook, I picked out a few images, 44 to be exact. Why 44? It was my 44th birthday, yesterday.

A Look Back | The Blizzard of 2011

It started exactly when they said it would, 3pm on February 1st. I had to get some photos at the lakefront. There were reports of 12 foot waves. So, we picked up the kids from school at 3:30pm and headed to North Avenue Beach via Lake Shore Drive.

Once we arrived, it was very clear that I would not be getting any shots of any waves. It was white out conditions. So, I jumped back in the car, where the family was staying warm and we headed back home.

To this day, I am very thankful that we did not get stuck on Lake Shore Drive. It was a few short hours after we were driving on it that it shut down and hundreds of people were stranded.

The snow continued throughout the night. The heat in the house even went out at one point. I was thankful that the firefighter was home. Even though, I think he wanted to be on the west side driving around on a snowmobile.

When we woke up the next morning it still wasn’t that bad, but then the second wave hit. Then it really got interesting.

The kids immediately grabbed their snow pants and boots and got outside to enjoy the winter wonderland.

Over 20 inches of snow fell. Life as we knew it came to a halt. No one was going anywhere, anytime soon. So, we decided to enjoy the time off from school and go on a little adventure. We crossed Western and headed to my sisters. The usual 15 minute walk, took twice as long.

Once there, everyone found the highest point they could find and jumped into the fluffy snow. Surprisingly, I was not over worried that someone would get hurt.

When we arrived home, a most amazing snow fort was waiting for us, compliments of our tenants at the time. The kids were so excited.
